Dr. Meyyappan: "I had the privilege of presenting the kickoff talk at this symposium a couple of years ago where I focused on introducing nanotechnology as an emerging field with a broad overview of the subject. It is an honor to return and I would take this opportunity to provide a progress report. I will cover carbon nanotubes in chemical and biosensors, as nanoelectrodes in biomedical applications and other applications that can make use of large surface areas. In many of the envisioned applications for nanotechnology - particularly in sensors, detectors, electronic devices, thermoelectric devices, etc., - inorganic nanowires have been coming up as strong candidates. Unlike carbon nanotubes, these nanowires cover materials across the periodic table and I will cover this comprehensively. Finally, time permitting, a status review of nanoelectronics will be provided." -- Meyya Meyyappan, August 2005
